Mactan-Cebu Airport to Cebu City: bus, taxi or Grab—and which bridge?

Compare MyBus, metered taxis and Grab from Mactan-Cebu Airport, including transfers at SM City Cebu and when each bridge route makes sense.

Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) is in Lapu-Lapu City on Mactan Island, not in Cebu City. Reaching a Cebu City hotel therefore means crossing to mainland Cebu.

The short answer: take MyBus if you are travelling light, it is operating when you arrive and SM City Cebu is a useful transfer point. Take Grab or a metered taxi for a direct trip to Cebu IT Park, Ayala Center Cebu, Fuente Osmeña, the downtown heritage area or a hotel well beyond the bus terminus.

Airport transport at a glance

Option Best for Main trade-off
MyBus to SM City Cebu A solo traveller or couple prioritising cost Most visitors still need a second ride to their hotel
Grab An upfront app price and direct trip Price and availability vary; mobile data is useful
Metered taxi A direct trip without booking through an app The fare rises with distance and waiting time
Pre-booked car or van A group, bulky luggage or an arranged welcome Compare the total quote with live car-hailing prices

Grab’s MCIA page gives a broad airport–Cebu City planning estimate of 15 km, 35–50 minutes and ₱300–₱500. Those figures are approximations, not quotes for a particular hotel or arrival time. Grab says its fixed fares appear before booking, except for GrabTaxi (Grab’s MCIA transfer guide). Bridge approaches and city traffic can make the trip longer.

MyBus: low cost, but direct only to SM City Cebu

The useful airport bus runs from MCIA to the SM City Cebu MyBus terminal in the North Reclamation Area. It is not a door-to-door hotel shuttle.

A schedule record preserving an airport-published timetable lists departures every 20 minutes from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. Its city-bound stops are Island Souvenirs Mactan, Maayo Medical Center, City Times Square, Chong Hua Hospital Mandaue, Mantawe Drive/MO2 and SM City Cebu. The record was last checked on August 23, 2026, but it does not establish that every scheduled bus runs on a particular day (MCIA–SM City Cebu schedule record). Confirm the next departure at the terminal before committing to the wait.

The same record shows a ₱50 reference fare but labels it unverified. Check the current fare displayed by MyBus before paying. MCIA’s own transport page was under maintenance when this guide was reviewed, so the schedule and fare warrant an on-the-day check.

When the bus is practical

MyBus is most useful when:

  • your accommodation is near SM City Cebu, Mabolo or the North Reclamation Area;
  • you can manage your luggage through a transfer;
  • you arrive comfortably within the published operating hours; or
  • minimising cost matters more than reaching the hotel directly.

From SM City Cebu, expect to arrange another ride to Cebu IT Park, Ayala Center Cebu, Fuente Osmeña, Colon Street, Pier 1 and most hotels. A compilation of MyBus notices says service stopped picking up and dropping off at the Cebu Business Park and Cebu IT Park transport terminal in June 2025, so older guides showing those as current MyBus stops may mislead (MyBus route-notice compilation).

A direct car becomes more appealing after a late arrival, with bulky luggage or when several people can share the fare.

Grab: compare a live door-to-door price

Enter the exact hotel or landmark, not just “Cebu City.” SM City Cebu, Cebu IT Park and the downtown waterfront are materially different destinations.

Grab lists these airport meeting areas:

  • Terminal 1 arrivals: Bays A–D
  • Terminal 2: North Wing or South Wing drop-off areas

Use the pickup point shown in the app and match the vehicle plate before boarding. Grab lists four- and six-seat vehicles, although availability can vary; luggage may determine which size is realistic (Grab’s MCIA pickup details).

The live quote also gives you a useful comparison with the combined cost and effort of MyBus plus an onward ride from SM City Cebu.

Metered taxis: choose the queue, then check the meter

A 2026 airport-transfer overview reports both ordinary white taxis and higher-priced yellow airport taxis at MCIA, with yellow taxis using a higher starting tariff (Wego’s Cebu airport transfer guide). Check which queue you are entering rather than assuming the vehicles have the same tariff.

For an ordinary metered taxi:

  1. Use the designated airport line instead of accepting an unsolicited offer around arrivals.
  2. Give the hotel name and full address.
  3. Confirm before departure that the meter will be used.
  4. Note the plate and body number.

A July 2025 Cebu Daily News report said the LTFRB ordinary-taxi tariff then in force was a ₱50 flag-down, ₱13.50 per kilometre and ₱1 per minute of waiting time. It also reported that replacing the meter with an unapproved fixed price violated LTFRB rules (Cebu Daily News on Metro Cebu taxi rates). Tariffs can change, so a correctly used, sealed meter and any current posted fare notice matter more than an old trip estimate.

Which bridge should the car use?

Metro Cebu has three road crossings from Mactan Island to mainland Cebu. They serve different approaches, so the newest bridge is not automatically the fastest route.

Marcelo Fernan Bridge

This northern crossing links Lapu-Lapu with Mandaue. By geography, it often suits trips toward Mandaue, Banilad, Cebu IT Park, Mabolo, SM City Cebu and Ayala. JICA’s project record identifies it as the four-lane Second Mandaue–Mactan Bridge, constructed to add capacity and provide another link between Mactan and mainland Cebu (JICA project evaluation).

That does not make it immune to congestion: queues on the approaches and connecting streets may matter more than the bridge span itself.

Mactan–Mandaue Bridge

The older crossing also connects Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue, a little south of Marcelo Fernan Bridge. A driver or navigation app may choose it when the destination, approach roads or live traffic make it preferable.

There is generally little reason for a visitor to insist on one of the two Mandaue crossings. Give the precise destination and compare the live route unless the suggested path is plainly inconsistent with where you are going.

Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX)

CCLEX follows a much more southerly alignment. The 8.9 km toll expressway connects Barangay Pilipog in Cordova with the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City (The Freeman’s route and toll report). The Philippine PPP Center also describes it as the third bridge between Cebu City and Cordova on Mactan Island (PPP Center project account).

That alignment makes CCLEX worth comparing for SRP, SM Seaside City Cebu and the southern side of Cebu City. It is normally a substantial detour for Cebu IT Park, Banilad, Ayala, Mabolo or SM City Cebu.

CCLEX is tolled. A 2025 report said a provisional Class 1 toll of ₱100 would start that July, while an approved ₱107 rate was intended for later implementation. Rather than rely on either historical figure, check the current toll and whether it is included in an app quote or payable in addition to a metered fare. CCLEX is a useful southern alternative, not simply “the fast bridge.”

Match the ride to your Cebu destination

  • Cebu IT Park, Banilad or Lahug: a direct car avoids transferring at SM City. The northern Mandaue crossings usually fit the geography.
  • Ayala Center Cebu or Cebu Business Park: Grab or a metered taxi is simplest; MyBus leaves an onward ride from SM City Cebu.
  • Mabolo or SM City Cebu: MyBus is strongest here, particularly for one traveller with manageable luggage.
  • Fuente Osmeña or Capitol Site: a direct ride avoids a transfer. Let live navigation compare the Mandaue bridges.
  • Colon, Magellan’s Cross or Pier 1: direct transport is easier with luggage. Do not assume CCLEX wins merely because these places are south of Ayala; compare live routes.
  • SRP or SM Seaside: ask the driver or app to compare CCLEX with the routes through Mandaue, including the toll.
  • A Mactan or Lapu-Lapu hotel: check the address before doing anything else. You may not need to cross a bridge.

Before leaving the terminal, pin the exact accommodation and compare the live Grab quote with the current MyBus fare and wait. For a taxi, use the marked queue and confirm the meter. For MyBus, confirm the next departure and plan the onward ride from SM City Cebu.

Allow slack before a ferry departure or fixed appointment. The distance is modest, but rain, city congestion or a queue on a bridge approach can turn the airport transfer into the slowest part of the connection.
